Chris Clarke - Recruitment Consultant

What’s your background?

Sales and publishing in my early years before moving into recruitment and emigrating to Australia where I focused on specialist IT recruitment within project services and applications and infrastructure.

What does your day-to-day job involve?

Talking and listening! All day every day.  If I’m not active within business development this means I’m busy delivering on client and candidate expectations or knee high in Boolean search strings trying to find a purple unicorn!

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Being thanked by clients, candidates or both, for a job well done.  I love it when by taking the time to understand their needs, projects and requirements I am responsible for a successful outcome.  I get a real sense of altruism to the candidate and pride in knowing that my service was able to deliver for the client at hand.

What are your interests outside of work?

  • My beautiful and very cheeky children.
  • Rock climbing, trekking & travelling. In my previous life I trekked to Base Camp Mt Everest during my Asian and Australasian sabbatical/odyssey

If a film were made about your life tomorrow who would you cast to play you as

a young adult?         Colin Farrell.  During my twenties and being a slimmer lad, I often had comparisons to him which very much inflated the ego! We share a cheeky if at times somewhat inappropriate sense of humour and both have thick dark bushy eyebrows.

your current age?     Ha ha!  Now it would be Ricky Gervais. We have similar mannerisms/humour/ looks and we match in the body department!

in old age?                   Jack Nicholson.  Like a fine wine he’s only gotten better with age.  This man has such an expressive face and one that needs minimal makeup for his roles (his most impressive being The Shining) .

If you were represented by a cartoon character which would it be?

Yogi Bear (See my old LinkedIn Pic!).

Who is your all time sports hero?

I like the ‘gentleman of sport’; those who are humble and have their ego in check.  So for me it has to be Lyoto Machita from the UFC and world of mixed martial arts.  Not only do I love his impressive record and what he brought to the sport, it’s his attitude that sets him apart. A true gentleman in and out of the ring with the fans and opponents. He delivers himself as being ‘grounded’ and ‘real’.

What makes you smile?

  • My children.
  • A single malt scotch Whisky.
  • Craft ale.
  • Newcastle Utd getting promoted (normally they only make me cry).
  • Being able to find my TV remote control within 2 minutes of the children going bed.

What makes you cringe?

  • People who take themselves too seriously. I respect people who can make light of themselves and keep grounded.
  • Poor grammar, especially the incorrect use of your and you’re! I don’t take it too seriously but I do recognise slight pedant undertones in myself!

What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?

  • Eclectic
  • Fortuitous
  • Inappropriate (humour)

What 3 words would others use to describe you?

  • Loyal
  • Genuine
  • Inappropriate (humour)

What super power would you like to have?

Flight – didn’t have to think on that all.  The ultimate freedom and one I always dream of.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

“Speak with confidence and authority and even if you are fundamentally wrong the majority will believe you” (Ex-Girlfriend and not a Politician!)

Seeing as we’re recruiting food manufacturers – what’s your favourite food?

Lasagne. That is all. It sells itself.
