Matt Bown - Business Manager - International
What’s your background?
I started my working life as a shopfitter / joiner which I worked hard at for 2 years before deciding I wanted to do something different. As I like speaking with people I thought I would give sales a shot; proved to be a good decision 20 years down the line I’m still enjoying it. Over the years I sold utilities, website optimisations, SEO and online advertising before migrating across into recruitment. In the 12 years before joining AIM I was responsible for technical engineering recruitment – placing contract and permanent candidates worldwide in the Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Petrochemical, Renewables, Construction, Utilities, Power, Automotive & Aerospace sectors.
What does your day-to-day job involve?
Since taking on the International desk the day just got a whole lot longer – my clients’ day-to-day hours don’t coincide with our standard office hours. I’m spending a lot of time juggling work life and private life. As with any good recruiter most of my time is spent talking with clients and candidates, a noticeable difference is whilst UK clients know all about AIM I’m now taking time discussing our pedigree, experience, capabilities and candidate reach in some detail and, though I say it myself, we do sound pretty impressive!
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Speaking with people, every day is different and so long as I keep on talking (or rather listening) I keep on learning, building contacts, knowledge and my reputation within a tough and highly competitive sector.
What are your interests outside of work?
My family are my main focus and interest, my wife and daughter (put them first as my wife is bound to take a look at what I’ve said), I also enjoy watching boxing and football, going to the gym and cycling (don’t ask me about my commute to work in bad weather – it’s a sore (very) topic).
If a film were made about your life tomorrow who would you cast to play you as
a young adult? Adam Sandler (specifically as he was in Happy Gilmour)
your current age? Tom Hardy (I’m relying on him to make my life look cool and interesting)
in old age? Brad Pitt (I can only hope)
If you were represented by a cartoon character which would it be?
Peter Griffin – Family Guy
Who is your all time sports hero?
Tough call – Mike Tyson and Stuart Pearce
What makes you smile?
My Daughter at 2am in the morning after 3 hours sleep, she brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
What makes you cringe?
People with no spatial awareness who invade your personal space – one of the worst examples is the stranger behind you in a queue who’s so close you can feel their warm, damp breath on your neck – lovely! Ah, you see what I mean.
What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?
What 3 words would others use to describe you?
What super power would you like to have?
Being able to fly as I don’t like traffic jams or walking.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Whatever you do focus and be the best you can be – at work, focus and be the best recruiter you can be, at home, focus and be the best husband and dad you can be. I’m definitely trying to keep this in mind.
Seeing as we’re recruiting food manufacturers – what’s your favourite food?
Pretty much any fish.
